About the Founder
Armed with an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, Teresa Hernandez, moved to Charlotte in 1998 to pursue a career in business consulting. Upon arriving in Charlotte, she was surprised to find that a city of this size did not have a venue that provided an array of multi-cultural art and events. For years she waited, hoping someone would open such a place.
In 2001, after a long-term sabbatical traveling through Europe and Latin-America and spending several weeks as a volunteer with a human-rights organization, Global Exchange, in Chiapas, Mexico, she decided to leave the comfort and security of the corporate world to launch her vision. A firm believer that you have to create the community and environment in which you wish to live, she sought to provide a place where people could deepen their awareness and appreciation of various cultures; a mix of a gallery and old-world café; a place where one could meet and discuss or debate the vicissitudes and beauty of life and all people.
